Resolution on Enact special legislation against Honour killings Featured

The 10th All India conference of Democratic Youth Federation of India expresses its grave concern over unabated killings in the name of honor and other heinous crimes perpetuated by feudal forces as retribution to young couples who dare to choose their life partners on their own.

Even after seven decades of freedom, India has not been able to become a modern society. Incidents of social boycott, exclusion from homes and villages, property grab and torture of young man and women who fall in love challenging the patriarchal customs and traditions are quite common. The brutal incidents like gruesome killings of youth and their relatives performing willful inter caste and inter religious marriages are becoming horrific especially in the North Indian states viz. Haryana, Punjab, Western UP. Similar incidents are being reported from other states like TamilNadu, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

An incident of most heinous nature surfaced in Sonipat district of Haryana, where a Dalit boy married an upper caste girl and recently, after four years of their married life, the brother of the girl along with his accomplices shot dead the Dalit boy and his parents. The girl also sustained bullet injuries.

Youth performing willful inter caste marriages are subjected to inhuman treatments, lynching and sometimes are even forced to commit suicide. Many a time, “punishments” like public beatings, blackening of face, public stripping, head shaving forcing the married couple and their relatives to drink urine. Female relatives of the Dalit boys are often raped.

Indian society is dominated by the forces with deep-seated anti-woman and anti-Dalit mindset. The carriers of this disastrous thinking, the self styled caste panchayats time and again challenge the constitutional rights and secular fabric of our nation. In order to make their presence felt in the society these unconstitutional forces actively pass violent and abhorrent orders, against ‘defaulting’ youth and their relatives, in order to curb their rights. Sometimes the parents succumb to pressure and murder their own children. If they opt to stand by their children’s decision these self declared ‘authorities’ and their leaders pass on unlawful dictums against their families and even abet horrific acts. With the right wing BJP at the helm of affairs in government today, these forces enjoy impunity with the fictitious issues like ‘Love Jihad’ they are enforcing feudal domination on the youth.

The dictatorial orders of these feudal ‘Khap’ outfits are facing opposition in the contemporary period, especially the challenges by the women movements and other democratic forces. In some cases these self declared authoritarian leaders got convicted, thanks to the efforts of these democratic and progressive movements. It is high time that India adopts a special legislation in order to curb the menace of brutal honour crimes.

Hence the 10th conference of Democratic Youth Federation of India demands the enactment of a special legislation to halt killings in the name of honur.

This conference calls upon all its units to launch wide spread social reform movements joining hands with other progressive and democratic organizations and individuals.

The resolution is adopted unanimously by 10th All #India Conference of DYFI

Many communities in the disease zones have inadequate sanitation that allow frequent trash piles and open sewers to serve as mosquito breeding and feeding grounds, according to the final outcome statement from the Aedes aegypti summit last month.
