Struggles

DYFI All India President Com. M B Rajesh MP started hunger strike in Agaly.

Urging the Union and State governments to address the woes faced by tribal community at Attappady in Palakkad district of Kerala, DYFI All India President Com. M B Rajesh, MP of Palakkad started an indefinite hunger strike at Agaly in Attappady today.

Com. M B Rajesh MP was forced to go on hunger strike because of state government’s ‘criminal neglect’ in dealing with the worsening health situation in Attappady, where infant deaths have increased alarmingly during last few months. The hunger strike is also for filling of doctors’ vacancies at the tribal super-specialty hospital at Kottathara.

The government had failed in implementing the Jananee Suraksha Programme, which was initiated with fanfare for pregnant and lactating mothers in Attapady and sought steps to revitalize the community kitchens in Attappady to save tribes people from poverty and malnutrition. The tribal community was on the brink of extinction owing to the apathy of the government. The ministry concerned was not discharging its obligation to Attappady residents. There was laxity in implementing Central schemes in Attappady.

The state government should act immediately to save the tribal community from extinction. Both the tribal community and Attappady are facing extreme neglect under the United Democratic Front (UDF) rule.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala State committee member A.K. Balan inaugurated the hunger strike.

Many communities in the disease zones have inadequate sanitation that allow frequent trash piles and open sewers to serve as mosquito breeding and feeding grounds, according to the final outcome statement from the Aedes aegypti summit last month.
